Carl Petersson

Born in 1981 in Lund, raised in Helsingborg, Sweden, Carl Petersson started to play piano at the age of fifteen. Ten years later he graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen, where he completed both his studies in piano and pedagogics with Professor José Ribera.

During his studies, Carl took part in numerous international masterclasses in Denmark, Sweden and Israel. Four times in a row he got a scholarship to the Tel-Hai International Piano Master Classes where he studied with the Israeli legend Prof. Pnina Salzman, Prof. Victor Derevianco, Prof. Emanuel Krasovsky, Prof. Vadim Monastyrsky, Prof. Staffan Scheja and Prof. Nicolai Petrov.

Performances

Carl has performed as a soloist as well as with orchestras on numerous occasions in Sweden, Denmark, Poland, France, The Czech Republic, Germany and Israel. In 2009 he made his North American debut when he performed with the West Coast Symphony in Vancouver, Canada and the Carson City Symphony, USA. Carl also frequently performs with chamber musicians and singers.

Tutoring

As a teacher, Carl taught one year at the Royal Danish Academy of Music (practics). He also prepared piano students at Per Brahegymnasiet, Jonköping, Sweden and at Birka Folk University, Östersund, Sweden, where he was substituting as head of the piano department. In 2009 Carl started his PhD. studies at the renowned Music Academy in Kraków, Poland under the supervision of Prof. Mariola Cieniawa where he also teach the piano students of her class. In 2011 he was also invited as one of the guest teachers at the Gothenburg Piano Festival along names like the french world pianist Domonique Merlet.

Recordings

In 2008, Carl accompanied with the Pilsen Philharmony Orchestra recorded the two piano concertos by the romantic composer, Friedrich von Flotow. The world premiere recording released on the Sterling label has been widely acclaimed by international critics (e.g. The Gramophone, Klassikmagazin, Klassieke Zaken and Classical Lost and Found). One of the major magazines, the French "Diapason", called Carl, with the highest rating possible, "a brilliant musician."

In February 2011 Carl released his solo CD debut containing Leopold Godowsky’s Java Suite - again for Sterling. It was picked as the "classical CD of the month" in Hi-Fi & Music and in February 2012, just in time for Flotow's 200 year anniversary Carl Petersson and Estera Rajnicka will record the duets written by Jacques Offenbach and Friedrich von Flotow.

Awards

He is a prize winner of numerous competitions. In April 2011 he won the 24th Chopin Piano Competition in Antonin, Poland and in Israel, during the 2005 Tel-Hai Master Classes, he was awarded with the Isman Family Prize – for a commendable performance. In December 2008, Carl received the Helsingborg Cultural Award for his recording of Flotow’s piano concertos, handed over by a delegate of the Swedish ministry of culture. He is also a laureate of the Längmanska Cultural Fund and Lions International.
